so that your days may be long
in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.”
--Exodus 20: 12
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
‘Honor your father and mother’
–this is the first commandment with a promise…”
--Ephesians 6: 1-2
My mother, Juleen, was born in 1919. As I said in an earlier chapter, she lives in an assisted living facility in Henderson, a small town in central Nebraska, forty-five minutes from where I live. I try to visit her about every five days; yesterday was one of those days. She did not want me to come, because it had been snowing and she did not want to worry about me. But after checking the forecast and the road conditions, it seemed like the best day of this week to journey out...

Thoughts to Ponder/Points for Discussion
- How has your relationship been with your parents? With your children, if you have any? Have you experienced God’s presence in these relationships?
- If improvement in these relationships is needed, what is the first step you can take? Can God work with you to make things better?
