Chapter 2: Simple Faith

“Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive

the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.”

The two-year-old grandson of a couple I know choked on a piece of pizza and died. Other hometown acquaintances lost their twenty-six-year old son to the war in Iraq. A gunman killed eight people at Westroads Mall in Omaha and then turned the gun on himself. Similar tragedies occur on a daily basis, and depending on how closely we are personally affected, we find ourselves wondering, “Why did this happen?” “Where was God? Why would He allow this to happen?” or “Where was Jesus?”


Since my grandson was also two years old when the other child choked, since my husband also served in the Army (in Vietnam), and since my own son and his family live in Omaha and sometimes shop at the scene of the shootings, the above incidents hit “home” and I found myself asking, “Why?” With my psychology background, I try to answer with reasons like the following...
