Chapter 34: Baptism Makes A Difference!

“And John testified, ‘I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on Him.”

--John 1: 32

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…”

--Matthew 28: 19

In the February 21, 1986 edition of The Lutheran Standard, I had an article published on page 18 entitled “Baptism changed my life.” I wrote it in response to an earlier story called “No magic in baptism,” by L. David Brown, printed in the same magazine two years earlier in the January 6, 1984 edition. His original essay had created quite a stir; and ten letters appeared in the next couple of months to agree or refute the author’s premise that baptism should not be done unless the family takes it seriously. I had also written a response, which the editors decided was worthy of its own article; but as things go in the publishing world, it took a couple of years to find its own space in the magazine...

To read the rest of this chapter, you will now need to buy my book, Simple Faith, Mighty Faith, published by Cornhusker Press and released 7-3-2011. Go to my website, http://www.JerriHaussler.com for ordering details. Thank you!

Thoughts to Ponder/Points for Discussion

1. If you or your children have not been baptized, is it something you should prayerfully consider doing?

2. If your children have been baptized, have you taken your adult responsibility seriously, diligently and faithfully teaching them the Ten Commandments, the Creed, and the Lord’s Prayer; placing the scriptures in their hands; bringing them to the services of God’s house; and providing them instruction in the Christian Faith? Has your own baptism helped you to live a “godly life”? What areas need some improvement?
