Chapter 33: The Roots of Faith

A shoot shall come out from the stock of Jesse,

and a branch shall grow out of his roots.

The roots of my faith grew branches as both Haussler children received their religious education at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Hastings, Nebraska. Besides many years of Sunday school and summer Bible school, Marci had four years of confirmation instruction and became a full member of the congregation in 1988. Phil was confirmed four years later in 1992. Like many Lutheran adolescents, both “slept in” most of their Sunday mornings after their confirmation ceremonies; and then left home for college. Marci hasn’t actively participated in the life of a congregation since that time, but Phil’s faith grew stronger while attending Nebraska Wesleyan...
