Chapter 18: No More Pain

“In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself,

so that where I am, there you may be also.”

The date was May 27, 1947, almost Memorial Day Weekend. The baby swing in the kitchen doorway crashed to the floor. The baby began to wail and the nearby mother lovingly picked her up. Blood dripped on the mother’s bare leg as she sat down to comfort her small child. The heavily-coiled spring that held the swing in the doorway, and made it bounce, had broken and pierced the top of the baby’s head. The fearful mother quickly called the father and the child was rushed to the hospital emergency room.


Dr. Howard Royer, the attending physician, cut the spring off at about an inch from the baby’s fragile skull and made an appointment with a brain surgeon in Omaha to remove the rest. Since the family car was too old to make the trip, the whimpering baby was placed carefully in a basket in the backseat of another relative’s car with the spring still in the baby’s head. She was promptly transported to Clarkson Hospital with the mother, father and a medical intern riding along. There was no interstate highway, so the drive went slowly...
